Figure Ground Consulting

Introducing our ground

Our consulting and coaching practices are built from the psychology of gestalt. We have been extensively trained in this field and believe it has transformative potential for people and organisational systems. We foster a spirit of discovery and curiosity in ourselves so that we come to situations with fresh eyes and open minds. We try to foster the same in our clients.

We work from a belief that the present moment has great potential for change; that becoming aware of the assumptions and beliefs we hold about ourselves and how our world works offer breakthrough possibilities for new ideas and practices.

Our research approach

Our approach to research comes from an Action Research tradition. Whilst our work is guided by the needs of a client situation, we also undertake longer term studies centred on areas of specific interest. For example, our research into executive transitions and our new research stream into the issues and themes of the post-career careers (Transitions).

We work using the following principles:

  1. Contracting for clarity. We know the importance of being as clear as possible on who we work for and what we are doing. Taking the time to struggle with questions of clarity mean we begin with a clear mandate and reduced ambiguity.
  2. Immersion. We immerse ourselves in the history of the client system and also focus on present experience. This includes ways in which the past and the future are present and influencing the current context.
  3. Dialogue and discovery. We develop and test hypotheses with our clients. Solutions emerge from cycles of developing and testing ideas in action, learning further in dialogue and then asking new questions.
  4. Implementation. For our research to be effective it needs to be actionable. So we pay great attention to what is possible, recognising that change ambitions and timescales often exceed the capacity of the organisation to do so. We coach and teach new ways to work that future-oriented solutions often need.
