Book Launch - Leadership Transitions

Sunday 26th May 2013

FGC is proud to announce the publication of….

Leadership Transitions: how business leaders can successfully take charge in new roles. By Richard Elsner and Bridget Farrands

Most organisations commission new equipment with more care than they ‘commission’ the arrival of new leaders. Structured maintenance plans and detailed templates would be a normal part of any machinery installation costs. Few organisations, and even fewer leaders, carry a comparable “maintenance plan” for role transitions of their new-in-post leaders.

How do new in role leaders engage with a new organizational world? How will they adapt their leadership whilst, at the same time, establishing their credibility and competence? New roles ask leaders to be rapid learners, explore unknown leadership territory and do all that under greater commercial pressure and visibility than ever before. Leaders report feelings of excitement at the challenge, pride at the opportunity and just as strongly, a fear that they will fail. But the passages and phases of role transition are knowable, predictable and plannable.

Richard Elsner and Bridget Farrands conducted extensive field research with teams and leaders to discover the mental, emotional and practical dynamics that occur in senior role transitions. Using a mix of real life stories, verbatim comments from front line leaders, plus tried and tested practices that build confidence and skill during transitions, the authors weave together a much needed, honest and practical narrative about the reality – not the myths – of leadership transitions.

“Leadership Transitions” is an exceptional book. It breaks many taboos about leadership and gives us an insider’s view of the pressures and challenges leaders really go through when taking on new roles. It also perfectly describes this mix of fear, excitement, being overwhelmed and loss of self-confidence they experience when (they get) lost in transition. The book is truthful to the point that it almost hurts to read it!
Philippe Boyer, People Development Director, BIC Group

Instead of "Leadership Transitions" being a prescriptive tool kit promising a silver bullet like so many business books, it attempts instead to reveal truths about the human experience of transition – both for the leader and their organisation.
This book provided me with an invaluable roadmap of what would be coming down the tracks, so I really did feel more skilful in the multiple transitions into the new organisation, country and sector - of my new role.
