Is today a good day to have a good day?

If there’s any truth in the old maxim that the first 5 days after the weekend are the hardest, what makes anyone show up to work on a Monday? Apart from being paid….what brings any of us to work each day?

Engaging employees, customers, regulators, interest groups, consumers - and how best to do that - is central to business and people strategies; finding the key that unlocks boundless energy, innovative thinking and delivering beyond what’s expected are the holy grails of engagement and retention of the best people. The assumption is that engaged people are going to be more motivated, more committed to the organisation, be more productive, happier and… loyal, so that they’ll do the right things, do things right and get the results you want. Maybe.

But look closer: there’s flaws in this loyalty logic...

  • First mistake is that everyone is equally valuable: they’re not. We’re not all equal employees when it comes to what our organisations need – which is why we allocate people into high potential groups, scarce skill groups and key worker categories. Some people are essential to the functioning of the business, others are necessary and others are just useful. So play favourites: recognise whose loyalty really matters and go after it. By the way, take a pause here and to ask which category you fit into.
  • Second mistake is that all employees experience engagement to mean the same thing: they don’t. Some want engagement for career reasons, others because they look for relationship and social needs from their work and still others just want a good job which will support their outside-work lifestyle.
  • Third mistake is that the people you most want to stay will be the ones that are most likely to go: if you want them so badly, chances are they’re valuable elsewhere too. They have portable and tradable value: how will you really keep this category of people loyal and engaged?

As we move from the knowledge economy to the connection economy, the loyalty spectrum gives insights into what makes for engaged people. Understanding the subtleties of how loyalty creates engagement might also be how Monday becomes a good day to have a great day.
